China clean energy transition: wind and solar installed capacity overtakes coal, Chinese firms supply 70% of wind gear and 80% of solar modules
chinadaily.com.cnChina's wind and solar capacity has now passed coal for the first time, according to the Report on China Energy Development 2026 from the China Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute. Combined wind and solar installations hit 1.84 billion kW at the end of 2025, and renewables account for more than 60% of total installed power capacity. New output from wind, solar, and biomass covered over 90% of new electricity consumption last year. The report also highlights China's position as the main clean energy equipment supplier, with about 70% of global wind power equipment and 80% of solar photovoltaic modules coming from Chinese manufacturers. Coal's share of total energy consumption dropped to 51.4%, while clean energy's share rose to 30.4%. Total primary energy production reached 5.13 billion metric tons of standard coal, up 3.6% year on year. The broader point is that installed capacity alone does not equal delivered power. The article notes coal output still rose in 2025, which is a reminder that replacing thermal generation takes more than adding panels and turbines. Grid integration, storage, and transmission will determine how quickly those capacity numbers turn into actual emission cuts.
