China carbon market trades 961 million tons, expands to steel and cement sectors
global.chinadaily.com.cnChina's national carbon market passed 961 million tons of cumulative trading volume by the end of August 2026, with turnover of 65.7 billion yuan. The market added steel, cement, and aluminum smelting to the power sector in 2025, bringing 3,680 key emitters under coverage, about 65 percent of national emissions. Preparations are underway for petrochemicals, chemicals, papermaking, and civil aviation. The voluntary emissions reduction market also registered 41 projects and 21.71 million tons of trading by August. A mangrove restoration project in Fujian was the first of its kind registered under that system. China wants all major industrial sectors in the carbon market by 2027 and has stated goals to peak emissions before 2030 and reach carbon neutrality before 2060.
