China carbon market tops 1 billion tons traded, adds petrochemicals and chemicals by 2027
chinadaily.com.cnChina's national carbon market has passed the 1 billion metric ton mark, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. The market currently covers about 8.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide, or more than 65 percent of the country's total emissions. Officials say coverage will expand to petrochemicals and chemicals by 2027, which would bring major industrial emitters into the system for the first time. The ministry also credited the market with helping cut emissions in the thermal power sector by roughly 530 million tons during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. China's carbon intensity fell 17.7 percent from 2020 levels, nonfossil energy reached 21.7 percent of consumption, and combined wind and solar installed capacity hit 1.84 billion kilowatts.
