China has cancelled two-thirds of the overseas coal power plants it had planned five years ago, according to a report from CREA and PACS. The scrapped 61.5 GW of capacity avoids around 6.4 billion tonnes of lifetime CO2 emissions, with recent cancellations in Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. Progress has slowed. In the 12 months to July, only 3.4 GW was dropped in Zimbabwe, 1.7 GW in Bangladesh, and 1.4 GW in Indonesia. Private projects outside the state sector are still moving forward, which means the 2021 pledge only covers part of China's overseas coal finance.
