China is expanding green hydrogen production from pilot projects to commercial scale, with new hubs in Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, and Shenzhen. The focus is on using wind and solar power to produce hydrogen for heavy industry, mining trucks, buses, and even two-wheelers. Inner Mongolia alone now has 80,000 tonnes of annual green hydrogen capacity, and a 195 km pipeline is under construction to connect the Bayan Obo mining area to Baotou. The policy push began in late 2025 when China's National Energy Administration approved 41 hydrogen pilots across nine regions. Since then, five city clusters have been approved for comprehensive hydrogen use. National hydrogen output reached 39 million tonnes in 2025, though the green share remains small. The next few years will show whether these projects can move from subsidy-driven demos to market-driven growth.
