China and Europe move toward shared auto testing standards and carbon footprint rules
chinadaily.com.cnChina is moving beyond exporting cars to helping write the testing rules those cars will be judged by. At a CATARC-organized meeting in Ingolstadt, Germany, Chinese and European automakers, testing bodies, and research institutes agreed to cooperate on crash-test dummies, virtual driving validation, and carbon footprint methods. The 2027 edition of C-NCAP will use dummies based on Chinese body data, while a new working group will work on common standards for virtual testing through ASAM OpenX. On the climate side, CATARC Carbon and DEKRA signed an agreement covering EU battery regulations, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, and supply-chain ESG due diligence. The plan is to do carbon accounting in China and have it verified in Europe, a model that could ease CBAM compliance for Chinese exporters. The two sides also launched a lab benchmarking project with Green NCAP and released a white paper on mutual recognition of automotive carbon footprints between China and Europe. Whether that translates into accepted calculation rules will determine if the cooperation is real.
