China Airlines used a record 40% sustainable aviation fuel share on its Taipei to Amsterdam route as part of SkyTeam's Aviation Challenge. The carrier allocated 36.3 tonnes of SAF for flight CI073, supported by CTBC Bank through a Book and Claim arrangement. That means the bank can claim the environmental attributes while the airline gains experience with SAF logistics on a long haul corridor. Beyond fuel, the airline cut weight by redesigning tableware and shifting to digital reading, removing over 4,300 tonnes from its fleet. Across eight TAC demonstration flights since 2022, China Airlines reports at least 600 tonnes of CO2 reduced. The move shows how airlines are using operational tweaks and corporate sponsorship to test lower carbon flying, even though the overall volume of SAF remains small compared to total jet fuel use.
