China achieves 50% hydrogen co-firing in a 40 MW coal boiler, a world first for large-scale carbon reduction

The test, run by Yantai Longyuan Power Technology, also achieved 100% hydrogen combustion. This is the first time such a high hydrogen ratio has been used in a large coal-fired unit. The technology uses a low-NOx burner and a full safety system for hydrogen delivery and combustion. The result matters because coal power remains a major emitter globally. If this approach scales, existing coal plants could reduce their carbon footprint significantly without being retired early. The hydrogen used is green, made from wind and solar power, so the full chain is low-carbon. The next question is cost and hydrogen supply at scale, but the technical path is now demonstrated.
