China has successfully tested a 40 MW coal boiler that burns a mix of 50% green hydrogen and coal, cutting coal use and carbon emissions by half. The test, run by Yantai Longyuan Power Technology, also achieved 100% hydrogen combustion. This is the first time such a high hydrogen ratio has been used in a large coal-fired unit. The technology uses a low-NOx burner and a full safety system for hydrogen delivery and combustion. The result matters because coal power remains a major emitter globally. If this approach scales, existing coal plants could reduce their carbon footprint significantly without being retired early. The hydrogen used is green, made from wind and solar power, so the full chain is low-carbon. The next question is cost and hydrogen supply at scale, but the technical path is now demonstrated.

The 50% reduction in coal use is impressive, but I wonder how much green hydrogen they actually have access to. Producing that much H2 from renewables is still expensive and energy intensive.

40 MW is small for a coal plant. The real test will be at 300 MW or larger. Also, hydrogen storage and continuous supply at that scale is a whole different challenge. Still, good to see the burner tech works.

The policy angle is interesting. China's coal fleet is huge. If they mandate hydrogen co-firing for new or existing plants, it could drive hydrogen demand massively. But the subsidy or carbon price needed to make it economic is the key.

From an industrial efficiency perspective, burning hydrogen in a boiler is still combustion. The round trip efficiency from renewable electricity to hydrogen to heat is low. Better to use that green electricity directly if possible. But for existing coal plants, it might be the only retrofit option.
