A Bavarian community is using a complementary currency called the Chiemgauer to drive local decarbonization. Residents earn these tokens by making sustainable choices, such as installing balcony solar panels, repairing clothing, or using natural insulation for home retrofits. This micro financial system functions alongside the euro to keep wealth within the region and reward low carbon behavior. The program has expanded to several other German regions, with independent auditors reporting a total saving of 12,800 tons of CO2 over four years.
