Chhattisgarh's Dhamtari district aims to become India's first model carbon agriculture district through soil carbon and methane reduction projects
newindianexpress.comDhamtari district in Chhattisgarh has signed a partnership with climate-tech firm PRITHU to launch two large agriculture carbon projects. The first project targets soil organic carbon enhancement across 80,000 hectares of farmland. The second introduces alternate wetting and drying for paddy on 30,000 hectares to cut methane emissions. The district estimates the initiative could generate Rs 250 crore in additional income for local farmers through international carbon credit sales. PRITHU has committed Rs 5 crore over three years for farmer training and green job creation. The district administration says the projects will improve soil health, water efficiency, and provide a secondary income stream. If implemented well, this could become a replicable model for Indian agriculture carbon credits. Key details like credit registry, verification standard, and project timeline are not yet disclosed.
