Cheshire East Council unanimously opposes Peak Cluster CO2 pipeline project
cheshire-live.co.ukCheshire East Council has voted unanimously to formally oppose the Peak Cluster CO2 pipeline, a 121 mile, £5 billion project that would move captured carbon dioxide from cement and lime plants in Derbyshire and Staffordshire to storage under the Irish Sea. The vote follows similar objections from Wirral, Cheshire West and Chester, and Derbyshire councils. Councillors cited safety concerns, construction emissions, loss of farmland, and the burden on communities along the route. Peak Cluster recently revised the proposed route after consultation, with the next round due in November 2026. The council said it supports the principle of carbon capture infrastructure but wants unresolved safety and environmental questions answered before any approval. The decision puts more pressure on the developer and the government to show how the project handles local impacts, not just the capture numbers.
