Chery and Shougang launch auto parts made with 55% recycled steel, cutting CO2 per ton
autonews.gasgoo.comChery Automobile and Shougang Group have started producing automotive components using steel with 55% recycled content. The companies say it is the first automotive application of steel at that recycled share. The material passed validation for body panels and structural parts, and each metric ton of recycled steel can cut CO2 emissions by about 1.2 metric tons compared with conventional steelmaking. Chery aims to reduce manufacturing emissions per vehicle by 60% from a 2023 baseline by 2030, reach carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2037, and across its full value chain by 2047. The two firms plan to expand cooperation on low-carbon steel and manufacturing processes. The key detail to watch is verification. The emissions savings depend on the production process and energy source, and it is not clear whether the 55% recycled content or the 50% emission reduction claim has been third-party audited.
