Chennai's OMR and Radial Road to become model low-carbon mobility corridors
newindianexpress.comChennai's Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road are set to be redeveloped as Model Urban Mobility Corridors. The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (Cumta) will prepare a detailed project report covering 25 km of OMR and 7.4 km of Radial Road. The goal is to cut greenhouse gas emissions by promoting walking, cycling, and public transit while reducing private vehicle use and congestion. The plan includes multimodal integration with railway, metro, and bus hubs, plus upgrades to pedestrian facilities, safe intersections, and green medians. It also targets better last-mile connectivity and improved public spaces under flyovers and near transit stations. Cumta aims to keep per capita GHG emissions flat or lower while improving traffic flow and road safety.
