Chemical impurities in carbon can create self-lubricating surfaces for energy efficient machinery

This process, called shear-induced aromatization, allows carbon coatings to self-lubricate during operation, reducing wear and energy loss in moving parts. The study used quantum-mechanical simulations to show that low-valency impurities stabilize nano-voids in the carbon network, enabling surrounding atoms to reorganize into slippery aromatic structures. This challenges the conventional view that impurities degrade material performance. The work points to a new design strategy for durable, energy-efficient carbon coatings that could cut energy use in industrial machinery and transportation.
