The imported power flows through subsea cables and covers over 90% of Guernsey's annual demand, reducing reliance on the island's fossil fuel power station. However, the existing cable cannot meet peak winter demand, so diesel generators still run during cold months. A proposed second direct cable to France was not pursued, so the islands remain dependent on the current link and on French grid decarbonization. The contract includes forward price hedging to smooth tariff volatility, but questions remain about whether the grid can keep up with future demand growth.

Good that they locked in supply, but the real limit is the cable capacity. Winter diesel still runs because the link can't carry peak load. A second cable would solve that, but it's not moving. Demand response or storage might be cheaper.
