Changwon, South Korea plans 14 trillion won clean energy shift with hydrogen hub and solar power

Changwon Mayor Kang Ki-yoon announced a 14 trillion won private investment plan to turn the city into a clean energy capital. The strategy includes developing Jinhae New Port as a hydrogen storage and supply hub, expanding industrial and agricultural solar power, and building offshore wind capacity. The goal is to create 100,000 jobs and fund an energy pension of 1 million won per citizen per year from clean energy profits. The plan responds to the scheduled closure of the Samcheonpo coal plant and national decarbonization policy. It also aims to upgrade the Changwon National Industrial Complex with AI-based smart manufacturing. The hydrogen hub is expected to start operations around 2029, linked to Doosan Energy's hydrogen power generation technology. The city sees clean energy as a driver of export competitiveness and regional economic survival.
