Chaffee County Transit Expansion Plan Follows GHG Inventory Naming Transportation Top Emissions Source
arkvalleyvoice.comChaffee County released its first community-wide greenhouse gas inventory, and transportation came in as the largest single source of emissions. The county estimates transportation produced about 82,178 metric tons of CO2 equivalent in 2024, or 28 percent of the total. That has pushed local officials to expand Mountain Valley Transit, finish an EV readiness plan, and steer development toward existing towns to cut vehicle miles traveled. The challenge is money. Mountain Valley Transit already had to end free Bustang rides between Salida and Buena Vista after federal budget cuts and reduced Medicaid reimbursements. Rural transit economics are tough because populations are small and distances are long. The inventory gives a baseline, but it does not say how much ridership or electrification would actually move the county's emissions. That makes the next few funding decisions the real test.
