Researchers in Spain are testing a new proton-conducting ceramic membrane that streamlines hydrogen production from biogas. By integrating reforming, purification, and compression into a single step, the CARMA-H2 project aims to reduce energy losses and lower the cost of decarbonizing heavy industry. The system operates at a wastewater treatment plant, converting waste streams into industrial-grade hydrogen and capture-ready biogenic CO2. This approach targets hard-to-electrify sectors while reducing Europe's reliance on imported hydrocarbons.
