CEPE challenges EU Critical Chemicals Alliance plan for mandatory sustainable carbon content
european-coatings.comEuropean coatings industry body CEPE has pushed back on conclusions from the European Commission's Critical Chemicals Alliance (CCA) about downstream lead markets. CEPE says the proposed measures, which include mandatory sustainable carbon content rules and levies, could hurt downstream competitiveness and consumer affordability. It also argues that paint and coatings makers are being asked to take responsibility for upstream data and production decisions they do not control. The dispute matters for anyone tracking EU industrial decarbonisation. The CCA wants to accelerate demand for sustainable, low-carbon feedstocks, but CEPE is asking for a full value chain impact assessment first, including effects on SMEs, product performance, and feedstock availability. The outcome will help determine whether EU chemical policy pushes supply-side investment or simply shifts costs onto downstream manufacturers.
