CBAM 2026 compliance: supplier data, verifier shortage, and deadlines EU importers need to know
en.ilsole24ore.comEU importers covered by the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) need to build their compliance process before 1 January 2026. The key step is getting emissions data from non-EU suppliers, because actual values require accredited verification and site visits. With only one accredited verifier registered by late September and Commission guidance published in August, the window for the first reporting cycle is tight. Businesses should compare CBAM costs under default values and actual emissions data, prepare accounting provisions for the charge, and watch the 50 tonne exemption threshold from 31 March 2026. Authorised Declarant applications can take up to 120 days. From February 2027, importers must buy CBAM certificates and hold enough to cover at least half of embedded emissions at the end of each quarter, with the first annual declaration due by 30 September 2027. Early supplier dialogue is not optional. Importers that start data collection and verification planning now will avoid default value estimates and the administrative delays that come with last minute applications.
