UK startup Caudal Energy has secured $5.6 million in seed funding to develop tidal energy systems based on the movement of marine mammal tails. Unlike traditional turbines, these oscillating fins are designed to work in mid-flow environments, potentially opening up more locations for tidal power deployment. The company, a spinout from the University of Oxford, aims to provide predictable baseload renewable electricity. They plan to use this capital to expand engineering and modeling, with a target for the first commercial deployment by 2028.
