CATL joins global coalition to standardize EV battery asset management with BMW, Xiaomi, and Google
autobuzz.myCATL has joined a global coalition with automakers like BMW, Xiaomi, Renault, and Volvo, along with Google and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to create a standard for EV battery asset management. Announced during London Climate Action Week, the partnership aims to address the fact that value chain emissions from mining and raw processing are five times higher than factory operations. The new standard, expected in 2027, will include unified diagnostic cell testing, simplified pack disassembly, and cell remanufacturing protocols. CATL's subsidiary Bangpu processed 210,000 tons of battery waste in 2025, recovering 99.6% of core minerals, and the company has reduced its carbon intensity by 32% using recycled components. The coalition's lifecycle rules will help automakers and fleet operators calculate asset values and manage financial risks. CATL is also expanding into European heavy truck battery swapping with Octopus Energy, leveraging a 1,250 km swap corridor tested in domestic shipping.
