CATL Chairman Donates $62.5M in Shares to Shanghai Jiao Tong Research Institute for New Energy
cnevpost.comCATL chairman Robin Zeng donated 1.5 million CATL shares worth about 420 million yuan ($62.5 million) to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Fujian (Ningde) Advanced Research Institute. The institute, established in June 2026 with the Ningde municipal government, Fujian Provincial Department of Education, and CATL, focuses on new energy batteries, photovoltaics, zero-carbon systems, and electric transportation. It is not a branch campus, but a research and talent development center near CATL's headquarters. The donation will support a 2027 graduate intake of about 50 professional master's students, including 20 under a dedicated CATL joint training program. Students spend their first year at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, then move to Ningde for industry and university supervised research. The institute's first phase, next to CATL's 21C Lab, is about 23,000 square meters and expected to be ready in December 2027. CATL remains the global EV battery leader with 333 GWh installed in the first eight months of 2026, a 39.4% market share. The donation follows a May 2025 gift of 4.05 million CATL shares by vice chairman Li Ping and his wife to Fudan University. The new institute gives CATL a direct channel for applied research and graduate talent in zero-carbon technology.
