Catholic organizations including Cafod and the Laudato Si' Movement have written to Andy Burnham urging him to reject the Rosebank oilfield project off Shetland. The field would produce an estimated 254 million tonnes of CO2 from its oil and gas, more than the combined annual emissions of 700 million people in low-income countries. The letter cites Catholic social teaching on creation care and neighborly responsibility. The Rosebank project was initially approved in 2023 but ruled unlawful by Scottish courts in January 2025 due to emissions from burning its reserves. Equinor submitted a new Environmental Impact Assessment in October 2025, and a fresh decision is pending. Labour's 2024 manifesto promised no new drilling licenses, making this a test of that pledge.
