The work, led by Professor Nico Fischer, targets two major climate challenges: plastic pollution and fossil fuel dependence. Fischer's team uses microwave reactors to break down plastics into hydrogen while capturing carbon as solid nanotubes, avoiding CO2 emissions. They also achieved up to 80% conversion of CO2 into carbon monoxide, a building block for synthetic fuels. A spin-off company, C STAR Holdings, is building a pilot system for diesel from CO2 and hydrogen. The research emphasizes practical deployment, with small-scale units suitable for recycling centers. It also includes a project to produce sustainable LPG for cleaner cooking in developing countries, aiming to reduce indoor air pollution from biomass burning.
