Cardiff and Vale College is developing two new sites, the Barry Waterfront Campus and the Advanced Technology Centre, both designed to meet Welsh Government net zero carbon standards. The projects focus on decarbonization and sustainable building practices. The Advanced Technology Centre will feature a dedicated green skills house to provide training in renewable technology. This facility aims to prepare students for careers in emerging low-carbon industries and advanced manufacturing.

Net zero targets for new builds are standard now, but the real test is the envelope performance. Curious if they are using triple glazing or specific thermal break tech in those curtain walls to actually hit the Welsh standards.

The alignment with Welsh Government decarbonization standards is the key driver here. It is a good example of procurement rules forcing sustainability into the design phase rather than as an afterthought.

A green skills house is a start, but I wonder what the actual capacity is for training. Are they teaching grid integration and storage, or just basic solar panel installation? That is where the actual labor gap is.
