Carbonzero Acquired by Gitxaała Enterprises: First Nations Ownership in Canada's Carbon Market
carbonherald.comCarbonzero, a Canadian climate consultancy, has been acquired by Gitxaała Enterprises Corporation, the economic development arm of the Gitxaała Nation. The deal makes Carbonzero 100 percent First Nations owned while keeping its name, clients, and services. Jeff Calvert is the new CEO. Gitxaała Enterprises gains a platform in both voluntary and compliance carbon markets, including British Columbia's Output-Based Pricing System. The company also holds carbon credits from the Great Bear Rainforest, which could feed into Carbonzero's work in the province's compliance market. The acquisition comes as Canada explores international carbon credit transfers under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. For carbon market watchers, the deal is another sign of Indigenous groups taking a larger role in climate finance and conservation. The practical question is how the Great Bear Rainforest credits will be used in BC's compliance system and whether the ownership change brings new revenue streams to Gitxaała Nation.
