CarbonRun plans to add limestone to Quebec's Saint-Maurice River to capture CO2
nationalobserver.comNova Scotia-based CarbonRun is proposing a river alkalinity enhancement project on Quebec's Saint-Maurice River. The plan would dissolve up to 45,000 tonnes of powdered limestone per year in the river, with the goal of removing 10,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The company says it follows Isometric's carbon accounting protocol and has already sold credits to Frontier, the advance market commitment backed by Stripe, McKinsey, and Alphabet. The project is still in the permitting stage. CarbonRun needs provincial and federal approvals, and has not yet reached formal agreements with local partners or the Atikamekw Nation. Scientists are asking for more research on the geochemical effects of raising the river's pH. The company expects to submit a final proposal by the end of 2026 and begin operations in 2027 if approvals come through.
