CarbonFarm Raises $7.8M to Scale AI Rice Decarbonisation and Methane-Cutting Projects
greenqueen.com.hkFrench startup CarbonFarm has raised $7.8 million to expand its AI-assisted rice decarbonisation platform across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. The company uses satellite imagery, field data, and greenhouse gas modelling to measure methane and water reductions from practices like alternative wetting and drying (AWD). Its stated goal is to help rice projects produce registry-certified carbon credits with independent, field-level evidence. Rice is a major source of global methane emissions, and AWD can cut water use by up to 30% and emissions by up to 50% without hurting yields. CarbonFarm says it works with cooperatives, agribusinesses, NGOs, and governments rather than replacing local players. The funding round includes Colam Impact, Proparco, Suma Capital, and Bpifrance, and follows similar investments in other climate-smart rice startups.
