Louisiana's carbon sequestration pause has exceptions, and Gulf Coast Sequestration is using one to move forward near Goose Lake in Calcasieu Parish. The company wants to build two test wells and a drinking water monitoring well as the first step toward a Class VI CO2 injection well. Residents at a public hearing focused on risks to the Chicot Aquifer, which supplies drinking water across 15 parishes. State regulators are reviewing the coastal use permit, and the project sits on the priority list in Governor Jeff Landry's moratorium order. Gulf Coast Sequestration also has a separate sequestration project in Cameron Parish awaiting a final decision. The written comment period for the Goose Lake permit closed in mid-September 2026.
