Carbon Neutral Fuels adds bio-SAF capability to UK green hydrogen plant, lifting output to 42,000 tonnes
gasworld.comCarbon Neutral Fuels (CNF) plans to expand its Project Starling SAF facility in Workington, UK, to produce both e-SAF from green hydrogen and bio-SAF from biomethane. The company says the updated FlexSAF design will raise annual fuel output from 25,000 to 42,000 tonnes, with first fuel production targeted for late 2031. Planning submission is expected in spring 2028, and the project has secured £6m from the UK Advanced Fuels Fund but has not yet reached final investment decision. The plant will use synthesis technology from Johnson Matthey and Honeywell, with green hydrogen supplied by 120MW of Topsoe solid oxide electrolysers. The flexible design lets CNF shift between feedstocks based on availability and market demand. This comes as the UK prepares for a 2030 mandate requiring 10% sustainable jet fuel, though questions remain over whether green hydrogen-based fuels will be available in time to meet the quota.
