Carbon net zero SEN school opens in Haverfordwest with solar and heat pumps | carboncredit.io

A new specialist school for pupils with additional learning needs has opened in Haverfordwest, designed to be carbon net zero in operation. The Portfield School project, delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction for Pembrokeshire County Council, uses solar panels, air source heat pumps, and low-energy lighting to eliminate operational emissions. The building also features high-performance wall build-ups and efficient fabric design. The construction phase targeted carbon reductions through Morgan Sindall's 10 Tonne Carbon Challenge, saving 11.2 tonnes of CO2e so far. The team used the CarboniCa tool to estimate and manage emissions across design and build. The project spent 95% of its supply chain budget locally and employed 86% local subcontractors. Phase two, due in early 2027, will add a new respite block and remodel the SEN Sixth Form. The school is the third collaboration between Morgan Sindall and the council, showing a repeatable model for low-carbon public sector buildings in Wales.
