Carbon Impacts Tracer Shows How Single Fossil Fuel Projects Could Drive Heat Deaths and Crop Losses
theenergymix.comThe Carbon Impacts Tracer is a new research tool that estimates the human and ecosystem costs of emissions from specific fossil fuel projects. Instead of stopping at tonnes of CO2, it links additional emissions to heat-related deaths, dangerous heat exposure, and food production losses. For the Montney Play in Western Canada, the tool estimates the project's remaining extraction could contribute to 1,665 heat-related deaths in Europe by 2100 and expose millions more to dangerous heat. The tool was built by researchers from six Australian and UK universities and is based on peer-reviewed work connecting CO2 emissions to warming and then to specific impacts. It is not a full accounting. Heat mortality estimates currently cover Europe, not Canada or India. Still, the approach could change environmental assessments by putting tangible losses next to project benefits, rather than letting 'globally insignificant' arguments carry the day.
