Carbon Impacts Tracer links fossil fuel projects like Bay du Nord to specific climate harms
halifax.citynews.caAustralian researchers have launched the Carbon Impacts Tracer, a public tool that estimates how specific fossil fuel projects contribute to global warming, glacier melt, and human harm. The tool is being tested on Equinor's proposed Bay du Nord offshore oil project in Newfoundland and Labrador, using emissions data from the project's own environmental assessments. It calculates 188 megatonnes of CO2 over 20 years, adding 0.00008 C to global temperatures and an estimated 25 heat-related deaths in Europe alone.\n\nThe tool is designed to counter the argument that any single project is just a drop in the ocean. By linking project-level emissions to peer-reviewed impact estimates, it gives regulators, insurers, and communities a concrete basis for evaluating new fossil fuel developments. Researchers also expect it to support climate litigation. The site currently covers seven proposed projects, with more planned as data becomes available.
