A new State of Carbon Dioxide Removal report warns that current national pledges for carbon removal are insufficient. To limit global warming to 1.5C, the world needs to scale CDR technologies faster than the previous growth rates of solar power and electric vehicles. While reducing emissions remains the primary goal, the study highlights that carbon removal is essential for addressing hard to abate sectors. Current removals are dominated by land based methods, with engineered solutions accounting for only 0.1 percent of total capacity.
