Carbon credit integrity depends on layered responsibility, ICBS 2026 panel says in Bali
fastmarkets.comAt the Indonesia Carbon and Biodiversity Summit 2026, panelists argued that no single institution can establish a carbon credit's quality. Standards, verification bodies, ratings agencies, and national governance each answer a different risk question. Certification sets a threshold, while verification confirms compliance at a point in time and cannot eliminate all future uncertainty. Independent ratings help the market scale by giving buyers a risk grade without duplicating expensive technical due diligence. Remote sensing and digital MRV only add value when reviewers use the data to flag anomalies. For Indonesia, credible national architecture and project-level integrity reinforce each other, but buyers still need to judge whether a credit fits their own objectives.
