Carbon County, Utah planning commissioners heard two big energy proposals at their Oct. 6 meeting. Altigen and Duct Tape asked for a conditional use permit for a 1,236-acre tech park east of Wellington with a 250 MW natural gas plant first, then possible data centers, cold storage, and critical minerals manufacturing. The commission tabled the permit because too many details about tenants and impacts were still unknown. Separately, Valar Atomics presented early plans for a nuclear project north of Wellington on state trust land. The company wants to build small modular reactors with TRISO fuel and helium cooling, aiming for 1.5 GW eventually, and attract industrial users on site. No application was filed yet. Both companies said they are not seeking tax incentives. The county expects more details when Valar files formally in late October and when the Altigen permit returns in November.
