The weight savings are a plus for range, but I wonder about the actual lifecycle carbon cost of producing these composites compared to cast iron. Does the range gain outweigh the manufacturing emissions?
It is less about the carbon footprint and more about the Euro 7 particulate limits. Regulators are finally looking at non exhaust emissions. If cast iron cannot meet the dust threshold, the material shift happens regardless of the energy cost.
Mention of the aftermarket is interesting. Most fleet operators will only touch this if the maintenance intervals are significantly longer than iron. I have not seen the hard data on the payback period for commercial use yet.
