Researchers are developing a new concrete binder using magnesium-rich silicate minerals that chemically transform captured industrial CO2 into solid magnesium carbonate. This process turns buildings into permanent carbon sinks while reducing the industry's reliance on traditional clinker, which is responsible for a significant portion of global emissions. Currently undergoing structural testing at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the material is being evaluated for compressive strength and durability. While challenges remain regarding cost, steel reinforcement compatibility, and building regulations, the technology offers a path to decarbonize one of the most carbon-intensive sectors of the global economy.
