A California-based company called Carbon Ridge won a startup competition at the Posidonia shipping conference in Greece. The event, modeled after the TV show Shark Tank, gave maritime tech startups seven minutes to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges that included shipping executives and the US ambassador to Greece. Carbon Ridge develops carbon capture systems for ships, a technology that faces challenges due to the large size of the equipment needed onboard. The win gives Carbon Ridge project sponsorship from Diana Shipping, along with advisory support and a small grant. The company had already partnered with US operator Crowley in 2023 on a pilot project to install a carbon capture and storage system on a small container ship. That effort also involved the US Maritime Administration, with plans to test the modular system in port and then at sea. The competition win could accelerate the deployment of this technology in the shipping sector.
