South Korean climate tech startup Carbolution, founded by physicist Lim Ji-soon, is bringing its SPOIC material to the global carbon capture market. SPOIC is a pillar-structured organic-inorganic hybrid that improves on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), offering about 1.5 times higher capture performance per gram, according to the company. Recent KTL tests showed 1 gram of SPOIC captures 130-140 mg of CO2. Carbolution aims to use SPOIC in dry scrubbers for semiconductor processes, direct air capture (DAC), and global carbon capture plants. The material can be tuned to capture specific gases, including fluorinated gases from advanced manufacturing. The company also highlights lower energy costs for CO2 separation, as SPOIC releases captured CO2 at temperatures well below 100°C, potentially addressing a major economic hurdle in carbon capture.
