Montreal-based CarbiCrete has issued its first carbon removal tons from CO2-negative concrete, one of the earliest issuances under Verra's VM0043 methodology for CO2 utilization in concrete production. The company replaces traditional cement with steel slag and injects captured CO2 into wet concrete, where it becomes mineralized and permanently stored. That makes the resulting products carbon-negative rather than just lower-carbon. The issuance, announced through carbon market partner 3Degrees, moves CarbiCrete from pilot stage to verified credits on the voluntary carbon market. It also gives the construction sector a concrete example of how industrial by-products and carbonation can turn a high-emission material into a verified removal pathway. For buyers, early VM0043 credits offer a chance to support utilization projects, but the methodology's durability and measurement rules will determine long-term credibility.
