CarbiCrete gets $1M Canadian grant to scale carbon-sequestering concrete paving products

CarbiCrete, a Montreal-based company focused on decarbonizing concrete, has received $1 million from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and the National Research Council of Canada. The funding comes through the second phase of the Low-Carbon Construction Materials Challenge program and will help the company expand its portfolio of decarbonized paving products. CarbiCrete’s technology replaces cement with a steel-making byproduct and uses CO2 to cure the concrete, permanently sequestering carbon in the finished products. The company already has two active production sites in Canada: Patio Drummond in Quebec and Canal Block in Ontario. It also launched a production line in France last year. The grant supports CarbiCrete’s goal to commercialize a full range of low-carbon hardscape products and eventually build a dedicated plant. The company’s CEO said the funding directly enables commercialization and helps solidify Canada’s role in low-carbon construction.
