US startup Caravel Bio is developing a carbon capture process using potassium bicarbonate and engineered enzymes to replace energy intensive amine solvents. The company reports a 12 fold increase in biocatalyst stability, which could significantly reduce the operating costs of industrial carbon removal. Supported by a National Science Foundation grant and Shell's GameChanger program, the technology focuses on making high performance enzymes cheaper to produce at scale. This approach aims to solve the high energy demand that currently hinders the deployment of large scale carbon capture systems.
