Capture6 Launches Project Tortuga Near Perth to Turn Brine Into Freshwater and Capture CO2
carbonherald.comCapture6 has started operating Project Tortuga at the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct near Perth. The installation uses eight containerized units to recover freshwater from desalination and industrial brine while capturing carbon dioxide from the air. Capture6 says the data gathered here will inform its first commercial facilities. The project lands in a region where water stress is already visible. Perth's dam inflows have fallen from 420 GL per year before the mid-1970s to about 76 GL per year since 2010, and desalination now supplies roughly half of the city's drinking water. Capture6 estimates that treating brine across Australia could add up to 470 GL of freshwater per year and support removal of up to 15 million metric tons of CO2 annually, though that figure is described as technical potential.
