Canadian Research Council partners with AnorTech on alumina-based carbon capture technology

AnorTech Inc. has announced a one-year research collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada to develop alumina-based catalysts for carbon dioxide capture. The project follows 2025 testing where AnorTech supplied alumina grades from its Gronne Bjerg anorthosite project in Greenland for CO2 capture and conversion into methane via hydrogenation. NRC researchers will work on optimizing amine-functionalized alumina adsorbents, focusing on adsorption capacity, selectivity, and long-term stability under different temperatures, CO2 concentrations, humidity levels, and simulated flue gas conditions. AnorTech will jointly fund the project and provide all alumina samples from its sustainable production process, which has a provisional US patent application filed in 2025.

Alumina based sorbents for direct capture and conversion to methane. Interesting angle. Would like to see energy balance data for the hydrogenation step though.

Agreed. The H2 source matters a lot. If it comes from electrolysis using clean power, the net carbon math could work. If it's grey hydrogen, this is just moving emissions around.

Worth noting this is NRC funding, not a carbon credit or subsidy program. That means the IP stays in Canada. Could feed into future industrial carbon management policies if it works.

Right. But the alumina comes from Greenland anorthosite. That adds a mining and shipping footprint. Would be good to see a full lifecycle assessment before calling this sustainable.
