Canada wildfire emissions study: 76% of carbon from 2023 fires came from peat and soil, not trees
nationalobserver.comA new study in Geophysical Research Letters estimates that 76% of carbon emissions from Canada's record 2023 wildfires came from burning peat and soil, not trees. The research used machine learning on NASA field data to calculate that the fires released about three times Canada's annual reported greenhouse gas emissions. Peatlands alone contributed 33% of total emissions, raising concerns about a feedback loop where climate change dries out carbon-rich soils, making them more vulnerable to fire. The study's lead author says better forest management alone cannot solve the problem since most of the carbon burning is underground. Only deep cuts to global emissions can reduce the risk. The findings come as 2026 wildfires threaten the Hudson Bay Lowlands, the world's second-largest peat complex. Researchers note limitations in field data from Eastern Canada and call for more ground measurements.
