Canada starts construction on Origins CCS Hub, nation's largest carbon capture and storage project
environmentjournal.caEnhance Energy has broken ground on the Origins CCS Hub in Clive, Alberta, which will be Canada's largest carbon capture and storage facility. The project is designed to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year initially, with room to expand, and is expected to be operational by January 2027. It will connect via pipeline to Alberta's CO2 transportation network, serving heavy industrial sources in the Industrial Heartland and potentially hard-to-abate sectors like cement, oil and gas, power, hydrogen, and petrochemicals. The project is backed by two $5 million grants from Natural Resources Canada and is an approved sequestration hub by the Government of Alberta. Enhance Energy already operates the Clive CO2 Sequestration Facility, where it has safely stored over 9 million tonnes of CO2, generating over $800 million in carbon credit value. This track record gives the project some credibility, though the economics and long-term storage integrity will be key to its success.
