Canada's $1 Trillion Critical Minerals Pitch: What the 2026 Investment Summit Means for Mining and Emissions
carboncredits.comCanada hosted its first Investment Summit in Toronto on September 14-15, 2026, with critical minerals at the center of the pitch. Ottawa wants to catalyze C$1 trillion in investment over five years, and mining accounts for 63 of the 167 projects in the federal prospectus. The Marathon copper-palladium project in Ontario just secured about US$1.3 billion in project financing, including C$140 million from the Canada Growth Fund. Canada's mineral production was worth C$64.3 billion in 2024, but the country still faces permitting, infrastructure, and emissions pressure. Mining's stationary combustion emissions were around 5.5 Mt CO2e in 2024, though broader facility categories that include oil and gas are much higher. Access to hydro and nuclear power could give Canadian mines a carbon intensity advantage if electrification and processing actually use it.
