Canada protects 81,400 hectares of carbon-rich taiga and peatlands in northern Ontario
canadiangeographic.caThe Canadian government announced over $13 million in federal funding, part of a $64 million project led by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, to protect 81,400 hectares of taiga forests and peatlands south of Kapuskasing, Ontario. The area stores more than 30 million tonnes of carbon, roughly equal to annual emissions from 34 million passenger vehicles. It also provides habitat for species at risk including the red-headed woodpecker and bobolink. Conservation groups and governments describe the purchase as a step toward Canada's goal of protecting 30% of lands and waters by 2030. The project is one of several under the Natural Heritage Conservation Program, which has helped protect nearly 966,000 hectares across Canada. Federal and provincial ministers are meeting in Toronto this week ahead of COP17 in Armenia, where progress on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework will be reviewed.
